It's All In The Head

It’s all in the head. What’s all in the head? That little voice that just asked that. Allow me to clarify. The brain controls everything you ever experience, no matter how real it is. Hormones are regulated by the brain, which in turn effects your health and bodily functions. Your brain controls heart rate, breathing, digestion and everything else. Everything conscious or not is in the head. Without a brain you would drop dead on the spot. Do you agree? Good, I’m glad we’re on the same page here.

So why am I telling you this? Because there are so many things in your life that you believe are outside of your control. Most people struggle through life with problems and they don’t even realise that it’s their own brain causing it. Everything except infectious disease can place responsibility on your brain. However, even infectious disease could have been caused by forces in the head due to the decisions that led to it.

I’ve lost some readers already haven’t I? Well tough cookies. Ignoring it doesn’t make it any less true.

It’s all in the head, circumstances I mean

You will be happy when you get that nice car you want. You will be happy when you’re rich. You will be happy when you find that relationship you were looking for. That’s the common belief, there is always something better right? But what will make you happy when you get this magic result? You will. The feeling of happiness is something that occurs in your brain, it’s a decision YOU will make. It’s not the circumstances that will make you feel better, it’s your own decision based on those circumstances.

But you didn’t want to hear that did you? No one does. No one wants to hear that being wealthy beyond their wildest dreams is not the determining factor of a fulfilling life. Think about it, money or relationships themselves couldn’t make a corpse happy could they? Of course they couldn’t. They only make you happy because of the hormonal and neurological responses occurring inside your very own brain that make you feel that way.

Personally recommended books that will change your life. And yes, I have personally read these and applied the strategies.

The good news here is that it is you, beyond all those circumstances, that is in control. Why not feel those emotions while you’re on your way to becoming rich or meeting that person? There is much research to suggest that feeling the way you would feel now instead of waiting, will make you take actions and make decisions that will bring you closer toward its accomplishment.

Health problems constantly, tiredness, pain…..yep, it’s all in the head

Now I’ve ruffled some feathers.

I have met many people with many problems they didn’t want to experience. These were very real problems, I’m not talking about hyperchondria and fake issues here. What I am referring to is issues like chronic fatigue, severe phobias, anxiety, continuous stomach cramps, headaches, breathlessness, hot flashes and many many more.

Most of these issues are diagnosed as some kind of illness. This is a correct diagnosis. The only question is, why does one person seem to have a never-ending string of these problems? Are they unlucky? The answer is that it’s generally a self-fulfilling prophecy. A person might experience some kind of illness or get a headache every afternoon at the same time. This must indicate an illness, so the person thinks. So what results is a pattern where the brain signals certain responses to fulfil the expectation of more of the same.

Now I’m not saying that there is no such thing as a physical health problem and that everything can be cured by some airy fairy positive thinking mumbo jumbo. What I am saying though is that most often these recurring issues are problems of thinking, expectation and stress. This stress and expectation leads to hormone and neurological problems that perpetuate the issue further and create more of it.

It’s all simple science really: You get a headache two days in a row, you’ve been stressed. What happens when you’re stressed? You perceive more pain, it’s a scientific fact. The stress leads to more constricted blood vessels and increased blood pressure, which then leads to another headache the next day based on the memory of the one yesterday. Then you all of a sudden suffer migraines. This is one example, I could think of dozens of others off the top of my head.

Here’s another onion in the ointment; drugs are only effective because the body is naturally capable of producing the same result. If it weren’t then the drug would not be effective.

Gaining control of your own brain

What you have read so far is good news. The good news is that you have 100 percent control. Any issues or emotions are not outside of you. With the right stimulus you can actually begin to manipulate how you feel regardless of circumstances. You can even go as far as affecting your physical health through thought, focus and emotion.

Why is it that some people seem to have it all? They were born with it right? Some were, but what about those who started with nothing and now seem to get whatever they want? How about health? There are some people that seem to get fit easily, never get sick and generally remain healthy and happy their whole lives.

I’m inclined to believe that these people instinctively learned to control their brain, the unconscious portion and the conscious portion. That’s what you need to do. Put aside the belief that it’s all some other force acting on you and just believe for a minute that you have control over these things.

Through my work I have had to deal with issues you wouldn’t imagine. I have met people with phobias they believe were there for life. I have worked with athletes that get injured before important competitions, every single time. All of them have been able to gain control of the thoughts and emotions causing these things. So here I will provide two very simple, step by step tools; the first is a simple method for controlling emotions, which in turn will help gain control of circumstances and beliefs. The second is a tool for controlling pain and general psychosomatic awareness. Remember, it’s all in the head.

Change your focus and limiting beliefs and you will change your circumstances

  • Identify the problem/s you want to eliminate. Define them and define why they are negatively effecting you.

  • Notice the pattern by tracing back as many occurrences as you can think of. While you do this, remember the thoughts and emotional states you were experiencing each time. Is there a coinciding pattern?

  • Now identify any limiting beliefs and points of focus that you believe has contributed to the issue/s. This could something like “my parents had nothing, I was born with nothing, so there is no chance of success for me”. This is a limiting belief, no matter how true you think it is.

  • Now do the opposite to the preceding steps. Identify the circumstances you would like instead, think of a new pattern, identify new beliefs that would lead to the desired circumstances. Write all of this down.

  • Come up with as many reasons that support this new desired belief as possible. Spend 30 minutes on this one. You essentially want to try and convince yourself of the new belief. What new coinciding behaviours could you put in place?

  • Now decide what you will focus on instead of what you’ve been focussing on. This sounds silly but focus is a major factor. From now on only focus on things that support your new beliefs and desired circumstances. This will naturally start patterns that pull you into circumstances that you want. It’s the same as the patterns that drove you in the wrong direction, they will just begin to happen.

There, simple right? Seriously though, it’s just about rewiring your brain to think differently and focus on different things. Research shows that those with mental illness tend to always find something negative about everything.

The allergies are all in the head. So are the headaches and heart palpitations

This is a tool for gaining a base level of control over your body. In order to gain control over it you need to have a certain amount of psychosomatic awareness. That’s what this is about, being aware of the mind-body connection and the influence you have over unconscious bodily functions.

  • People such as martial artists and skin divers have proven that they can control things such as heart rate. That’s your first missions if you choose to accept it. Sit in a quiet place and start by simply noticing things like heart rate, breathing, the pulse in your ear, the heat of your hands and anything else you can think of.

  • Once you can shut off all awareness of everything but the bodily function you are focussing on, it’s time to begin manipulating it. Lets use heart rate as an example, begin trying to lower your heart rate. After a little practice you will be able to bring it down by a few beats a minute. Since this is almost entirely an unconscious action, controlling it means you are developing conscious control over unconscious processes.

  • Once you can manipulate things like heart rate, body temperature etc, it’s time to start changing specific things you don’t want to experience. Start focussing intently on getting rid of pain, creating feelings of well-being and euphoria and anything else you want to change.

It sounds rather simple and a little like mumbo jumbo, but if there are certain things you are already unconsciously causing then surely the desirable things can also be manipulated and manifested. People do it all the time.

It’s all in the head because of a perpetuated, self-fulfilling response

It’s all a pattern. One thing goes wrong and then everything else seems to follow. It can seem like this is just bad luck but it really is all in the head. I’m not writing this article to be an ass either. I know many people who would approach the topic arrogantly and just say “get over it, it’s all the head, stop your complaining”. That’s not what I want to do.

The purpose of this article is to illustrate that most things are controlled by the brain. Circumstances are a result mostly of your actions and decisions, which are simply patterns of thought and behaviour. These things can be controlled. Rarely is there such a thing as bad luck.

The more controversial aspect of this topic is the physical side of things. Most people suffering a string of issues or a mystery illness do indeed have a very real disease and very real symptoms. These symptoms are not fake, neither is the actual condition. However, thoughts and emotions control things like stress responses, shock etc. These things are physical, yet we all accept that stress is a mind-created condition. The same is true for many other things. How does the mind control them? It stimulates protective mechanisms, immune responses, sympathetic nervous system responses and more. These things inturn create chain reactions that manifest in the physical issue, the very real physical issue. The goal is to gain control of all these responses and hence gain control of our physical and mental condition and of our circumstances.

So repeat after me, it’s all in the head, it’s all in the head, it’s all in the head.
