Definition Of Potential

The definition of potential and what we could really do:

We all have a different view of the definition of potential, of what we are capable of, this is formed throughout our life based on our belief systems and conditioning which leads to our ultimate perception of reality.

This has been covered several times throughout this website. Now it’s time to use these tools to determine what we are truly capable of. What could you do if you really applied yourself? As Thomas Edison said, “if we did everything we were capable of we would literally astound ourselves”. He obviously had a high standard in the definition of potential.

The aim of this brief section is to get you thinking and contemplating what you could do if you really wanted to. What could you find a way to do if you were truly committed? What could your definition of potential be if you just decided?

The answer is basically anything. You might have been conditioned throughout your life with statements such as “be realistic” or “get a real job” and so on. If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to banish those thoughts and forget they even exist; you need to pretend (if you don’t truly believe) that you have a genie that has granted you unlimited wishes.

If this were based purely on imagination and you were writing a fairytale, what would you choose to include? What would your definition of potential truly be? Forget about what is possible based on what you believe, just think, “well if it were possible I would want…” just pretend you are creating the ideal fantasy.

Forget about rules and about what the world at large says and does. Forget about the presuppositions on what mainstream thinking believes is the real definition of potential.

If you want to be a multi-billionaire coming from a poor background then so be it, don’t write off your capability to do so. If you want to eliminate world hunger then go for it, there must a strategy that you could apply if you looked hard enough and used your imagination.

You might want a number of enormous things to happen in your life but they are so outrageous that you really don’t even think about it, well now is the time to pretend for a moment that there is a way to achieve these things, you just need to stay committed enough to find it or create it.

Now is the time to pretend there are no limits to the things you can do, have, change and experience. What is there to lose? It won’t kill you. Are you afraid to get your hopes up? Well that kind of thinking leads to greater disappointment than if you aim outrageously high and only make it three quarters of the way.

There’s a funny cartoon in the Jack Canfield book ‘The Success Principles’ where one guy dressed in tattered old clothes says to another, “I have everything beyond my wildest dreams, unfortunately my dreams were never very wild”.

The problem with most people's defintion of potential is exactly that, they don't dream big enough dreams. Most people don't see the definition of potential as being something we can actually choose.

We are told throughout our lives to not get carried away, to think realistically etc. But who determines what is realistic? Isn’t that just a matter of opinion? As I have mentioned before, reality is whatever you choose it to be. Successful people are those who dream big dreams, they live them, they breathe them and no one can steal them away by telling them to come back to earth and be realistic.

Make your definition of potential one that tells the world you are someone who can't be talked out of your goals.

Become associated to thinking big; train yourself to say “what if”. Make it a daily habit to dream up reasons and create references that create and firm your beliefs of certain possibilities, even if the references are imagined at first. Use whatever logic necessary to justify that things are possible even when it makes no sense to anyone else.

Condition yourself to believe that everything that you can possibly dream, imagine and fantasise about does in fact have a strategy somewhere, even if you have to invent one. Never ever say something is impossible, just have absolute faith from now on that whatever you can think of you can find a strategy for, even if you haven’t figured it out yet.

Become a kid again, kids don’t believe that anything is impossible, kids will tell you they want to fly like Superman and climb up walls like Spiderman.

When I was about 5 years old, I built a spacecraft; it was a cardboard box with a plastic tube attached to the rear, which was the jet thruster. I was going to outer space, not just in my head, I was 100% convinced that I would perfect the machine until it would take off and send me hurtling to other worlds. I was committed and I was certain it would work. I just hadn't figured out the right strategy by that stage.

My problem is the same as anyone else’s though, I was told that it was a good game but sometimes I needed to be serious, this kind of conditioning brings you to the level of thinking of the majority of people who are frustrated with their lives and are not living their passion. This creates an average and ordinary definition of potential.

You know what you need to do, just go out there and think big. Just think “what if”, pretend that you live in a total fantasy world where you could do absolutely anything you were committed to just by deciding. Take notes and notice the inevitable changes that occur both within yourself and your own perception of life and to the outside circumstances you begin to experience.

Others will treat you differently and you will find solutions to problems that you previously saw as unsolvable. Be warned and prepared though that you will likely experience opposition and criticism, as I have told many people before… “Criticism and cynicism is the attempted justification of one’s own insecurities and limitations”.
