Mastering Your Emotional States

So we have previously discussed how to master our emotional states, which is exactly what mastery of state is about. This section will be brief because this area is pretty much covered elsewhere on this site but we will discuss how to master other skills in our lives and how to use the new found mastery over our emotional states to empower our lives and master everything else in life.

Everything we do in life is influenced by how we feel in each moment and every skill we want to master and do well is also determined by our emotional states. Lets say you want to master the art of archery, you have had no practice but if you can get yourself to model and experience the emotional state of a master archer at the crucial moment then you are more than half way to producing the desired result of becoming a master archer yourself. This is true for anything you want to do, if you can find a way to access and feel the emotional states that you need to master something then you will find it radically faster to achieve results in all areas of your life.

If you want to show your love and commitment to your spouse or children, you need to be in the right state. It’s no good trying to do this if you are in a state such as the one you were feeling in your kickboxing tournament. You need to access what is appropriate for the task at hand. So how do we do this? You need to first decide what it is you want to do or master. Next you need to get a general idea of the type of emotional state that you would need to be in to produce results in this area. Now you need to find out how to feel this state. There are a number of ways to do this, some of which have already been discussed…

  • To change your state you can model someone who has mastered the area that you want to master. Ask them what they do, copy their physiology, ask them what they focus on, what language do they use etc? Get their exact strategy for feeling that state and do exactly the same.

  • Another way is one we have covered. Again get an idea of what state you need to experience. Then you need to use your own intelligence to figure out the physiology you would need to master that state. You also need to use the rest of the triad. This is one to use if you don’t have someone else’s strategy to model. The next thing is simply to apply it, develop it and condition it until it gets you the desired result.

The thing to note about mastery of emotional states is that everything we do and the way we do it is influenced somewhat by leverage and skill but it’s our ability to manage our state that will accelerate growth in anything you want to accomplish.

Without the right state you will never truly master anything, this includes fulfilment. Without managing your state you will never feel the emotions you want to feel and no amount of external success will get it for you.

Practice and condition your ability to control emotional states, do it to feel the emotions you want to feel and also to get into the states needed to get anything done at the most efficient and accurate level. Develop control over your states in every area of your life, don’t get caught being one-dimensional.

As I said, emotional states affect everything, it’s because it’s something that when you learn to control it, you will experience growth in every area of life, it’s not specific to one skill or mastery of one single area, it will provide massive growth to everything you experience, accomplish and every decision you make. Managing your emotional state is probably the most important skill you can develop in order to create an extraordinary life.
