Fitness Training Methods of Bruce Lee

The fitness training methods of Bruce Lee must have had some effectiveness by taking into account the fitness level of Lee. He was undoubtedly one of the all-round fittest individuals ever. Keep in mind that the fitness training methods of Bruce Lee were used a very long time ago and were based on his own personal observations rather than proof of effectiveness.

It is my belief that the perfection of Bruce’s physique and abilities was more a result of his consistency and daily habits than of sound fitness training. However, the purpose of this article is not to show Bruce Lee’s methods of conditioning as being the best practice available. We are simply looking at what Lee did to build the physique and physical attributes that are so famous.

The following is taken from various sources including his first book “The Tao of Jeet Kune Do” and “Jeet Kune Do: Bruce Lee’s Commentaries on the Martial Way”.

Bruce Lee trained in martial arts every day for at least two hours. He believed that in order to be a great fighter you need to be well conditioned physically. So Bruce believed in a solid regime of fitness training in all aspects.

Schedule

Weight training: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

  • Clean and press - 2 sets of 8

  • Squat - 2 sets of 12

  • Pullover - 2 sets of 8

  • Bench press - 2 sets of 6

  • Good morning - 2 sets of 8

  • Clean and press - 4 sets of 6

  • Squat - 4 sets of 6

  • Good morning - 4 sets of 6

  • Bench press - 4 sets of 5

  • Curl - 4 sets of 6

  • Running on Monday, Wednesday and Friday

  • Cycling on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

  • Rope Skipping on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

  • Sit-up

  • Side leg stretch

Other Aspects of the Fitness Training Methods of Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee would run up to six miles every day.

“Jogging is not only a form of exercise to me, it is also a form of relaxation. It is my own hour every morning when I can be alone with my own thoughts.”

The abdominals are of most importance in everything. Any physical activity requires the abdominals because it is the centre of your body from which all else pivots.

Linda Lee, Bruce Lee’s wife, recalled that Bruce would ride the stationary bike for 45 minutes and by the end there was a pool of sweat beneath him. He would generally ride on a high resistance over a distance of about 10 miles.

The fitness training methods of Bruce Lee may not be state of the art by today’s standards. It was his commitment and continuous efforts at self-improvement that created the abilities of the cult hero. His physique was admired by some of the world’s top bodybuilders, his doctors believed he was the fittest man they had seen and he publicly performed many feats of amazing physical ability.
