How to develop passion is a question I get asked all the time. I hear things like “I was passionate about things when I was younger but now I just can’t seem to muster up the enthusiasm”. It’s sad but true. As a child you are passionate about what you are interested in, it’s fun to go out and explore and learn and engage yourself fully in whatever it is you are passionate about this week.
How to develop passion: A step by step guide
A few years ago I never would have thought I would be writing an article about developing passion. It’s something I thought just existed when you were really involved in something. That’s until I experienced a lack of it myself.
Some years ago I got so caught up in making things succeed that I lost all passion for something I previously loved. It became a laborious task every time I was working on my business. Fitness seemed stressful, as did personal development. How could something I was previously beaming about become stressful to me? I couldn’t find it again for the life of me. That is until I took some time out and worked on other things. When I started again it was about having fun and following an interest, not making money and quitting my day job.
The following is a step by step guide on how to develop passion…
Build the Muscle
Passion is like a muscle, it grows and develops when it is used and pushed just that little bit outside of its comfort zone. If a muscle is not used then it atrophies, meaning that it wastes away. Passion is no different, if you don’t experience it for a while then it will be harder and harder to access it in the future.
To develop passion you need to experience it. That sounds like a double-bind at first. If you came here looking for a way to develop passion then I will give it to you. It sounds silly that you have to experience something before you can experience it, but it’s true.
Everyone experiences some level of passion for something. It is always there, lurking beneath the surface. You may not see it or know how to access it but you can always pretend. Developing passion can be achieved by pretending there is passion. The more you pretend (realistically), the more likely you are to feel it. You can also remember times when you were passionate and just escape back to that time and work at bringing the same state into the here and now.
So the first step in how to develop passion is experience it. Work the muscle, pretend, remember past passionate time etc. Try and go back to when you were younger and experienced passion and excitement for something. Remember that time and put yourself there.
Find Your Purpose
Many people are not passionate because they don’t even know their purpose in life. How can you have passion for something if you don’t even know what it is? It’s just silly.
Begin by finishing the sentence “I am…..”
Keep answering this for at least 30 minutes. This will help to get to know yourself a little better. When you can’t think of anything just write anyway.
Next finish this sentence “My purpose in life is….”
Do this one for the same amount of time.
Now list all the things that you love. You know, like in the movie Sound of Music. What gets you excited?
If you could have anything
If you could have anything what would it be? I mean if there were no restrictions that is. Create a list of things you would choose if you could have anything.
From there create an action plan to get it. Sounds simple and you have heard it before but try it anyway. Be a tortoise, don’t rush things, that’s when you get pressured an lose your passion.
Have Fun
When people ask me how to develop passion my response is always to have fun. Don’t become bound by rules and restrictions. You need to enjoy the process, that’s what passion is, it’s enjoyment, it’s fun.
Follow these steps on how to develop passion and you will soon find yourself passionate again. I must warn you though that you need to do it with energy and expectation, not seeing it as another chore that you have to complete.
With passion you are able to seamlessly attract opportunity.
