Life Decisions
Life decisions have the power to make or break you. It is decisions that shape your destiny. Every small decision you make leads to other things, which gradually shapes the direction of your life. I like to use the following metaphor for how life decisions become the determining factor that shapes your life…Have you ever played golf? Maybe you have seen someone hit a golf ball. From the tee you line up the club and strike the ball in the hope that it will fly straight down the fairway and land on target. At the tee end you need to make sure the club is aligned precisely. One millimetre of difference at the tee can make a big difference at the other end. You strike the ball with a tiny adjustment in your club face at the tee end. It seems like a such a small difference that it really shouldn’t matter. However the ball travels further and further off course as it soars down the fairway. One degree at the tee turns into 30 metres at the other end. This was an exponential change that began as a subtle angular mistake. Little things like life decisions can mean totally different results the further down the track you go. You can make a seemingly small decision today to go to a different coffee shop. You go to that coffee shop and start talking to a person waiting for their coffee. You decide to go back to this coffee shop tomorrow and talk to the same person. After a while you end up organising a social engagement with this person. Over time your relationship grows and they end up being the person you marry. The thing is that this person is from Nigeria and you both end up moving there. While in Nigeria you start a tourism business and later buy a game reserve and spend your life working to preserve the local wildlife. That apparently tiny decision to choose a different coffee shop has led to a completely different lifestyle on the other side of the world. Of course, this is just an example that I made up in my head, but it does show you the power every decision has to shape your destiny. Little ThingsMost people look at the big things they need to do to accomplish certain things in their life. Life decisions, as we have seen, can snowball into massive things. But it’s never the big stuff that determines your life’s path, it’s always the little stuff along the way. The big things are the ones you notice. They are in your awareness and thus cop the blame when things don’t go according to plan. Here’s what I want you to do… Notice habits you engage in on a daily basis. Habits are behaviours of a repetitive nature, they are things you do on a regular basis. What sort of habits have you noticed about yourself? Maybe you have certain thoughts and behaviours that always lead to patterns in your life. These patterns are a result of the habits. Change a few very small habits and watch the major changes that occur in your life. Be conscious of every decision you make for a while. Map out the longer term consequences. This of course is a hypothetical task, you will need to make it up. However doing this will help you to be conscious of what certain habits can lead to. Doing this for a while will teach you to be aware of cause and effect and after doing it you will develop the ability to make better decisions automatically. Change little aspects of your focus. It is what you focus on habitually that determines what is in your conscious awareness. Change little things about your focus and daily experience. Read a different type of book, look up more often, have something different for breakfast, go a different way to walk, change your morning ritual etc. Just create some different experiences that will help to open you up to other possibilities. Changing your focus will lead to other options in your awareness when you are making life decisions. ConclusionLife decisions are the things that shape your life. Making seemingly small decisions does not necessarily mean the results are small in the long term. Be aware of the life decisions you make on a daily basis. Manipulate little things that are well within your capabilities. By being aware of and controlling small life decisions you are creating enormous power and choice to shape your life the way you want it rather than wondering why your life took a different direction than you had hoped.
