Psychological Threshold

Your psychological threshold is an intangible, unmeasurable aspect of you mind-set that determines what you are capable of tolerating. I say unmeasurable because it is something that is hard to determine. In the physical sense two people may be able to perform at the same level. However this doesn’t determine psychological threshold. One may be fit and the effort required could be way below what the person is truly capable of. The other person could be significantly less conditioned physically but has a higher psychological threshold. This person is able to perform at that same level because they are capable of stepping out of their comfort zone and performing at near maximal physical capacity.

For the most part, it is psychology that determines a person’s capabilities. I have coached many people who simply can’t tolerate extreme effort, even though their body is physically able to do so. I have also coached people lacking in physical condition who can perform at their absolute physical peak simply because at some point in their life they acquired the discipline through extreme effort. The physical aspect may have been reversed due to inactivity, however the psychological aspect has carried on. This is something that sticks around and as a result will determine that individual’s capacity.

How Psychological Threshold is Developed

Psychological threshold is developed through real-world application of effort well beyond what is comfortable.

Throughout a person’s life they are subjected to many challenges and need to develop the ability to overcome them to some degree. You are influenced by your friends, family, idols and experiences. These things determine the decisions you make along the way as it relates to effort. The more often you are desensitised to effort levels beyond your comfort zone, the higher the psychological threshold.

The psychological threshold will only ever be developed to the level at which it is experienced in reality. If a person is subjected to physical effort that is 80 percent of their capacity they will grow to believe that this is extreme effort and will not go beyond it. If someone gets up early in the morning to exercise but only does so in summer will not have the mental tolerance to get out of bed when it’s cold or raining.

So it’s entirely mental how much a person will tolerate. The physical capacity alone is not an accurate indicator of potential. There is always more, always another level. This applies not only to physical effort but to every other aspect of life also.

So how can you develop a high psychological threshold?

This is something Personal Evolution coaches have a lot of experience in developing. We do so through contextual methods. This means putting the person in the extreme situation and then getting them desensitised to the stimulus so they then have a new and higher threshold.

The benefits of this method are many, however the primary one that stands out is REAL. It is real world adrenaline, real world suffering, real world application. It doesn’t matter which aspect of life we are dealing with, it is always in context. This is the problem with disciplines such as martial arts. Many martial artists train in a safe, cosy environment where they have all the time in the world. This will not develop an adequate psychological threshold that can be transferred to a real application.

To develop this threshold to your maximum potential you simply must apply training and learning of anything within the real context. Skills training is great but not without the psychological will to carry out the actions.

Take any level of accomplishment in your life, it can be to do with family, relationships, career or physical fitness. Put yourself in an uncomfortable position, one that closely copies the emotions and circumstances that are required for real application. Then perform well beyond your comfort zone.

We use this simple conditioning method with many athletes and others. We simply push them to the edge of their psychological threshold and keep doing so until it starts to get harder and harder for a person to concede defeat. The mental impact of extreme effort cannot be avoided. That’s the point. It leaves an impact without even realising it.

So apply extreme effort that even causes fear. There is a psychological purpose for doing so. The purpose is simply that extreme effort will force you to adapt mentally to build more tolerance, not necessarily to have a higher capacity on any level. The goal here is to develop an extreme psychological threshold and physically carry it out.
