It really refers to the raw physiological capacity of an individual as it pertains to specific sports and activities. You could hire a strength and conditioning coach to develop strength, power, speed, endurance or any other aspect of high performance fitness. In short a strength and conditioning coach is an expert who trains people and teams to reach their physical potential, basically anything physical that is unrelated to aspects of skill. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE: A tennis player receives specific coaching for the game of tennis from an experienced tennis coach. This is aimed at teaching them the fundamentals of tennis and working on game strategies etc. Beyond that though, the player needs specific fitness related to their sport. This is where the strength and conditioning coach comes in.
